It takes its name from the Achates river in Sicily, where the ancient Greeks first found it, and it has been used for jewellery, seals and carved ornaments for thousands of years, from the Sumerians and Egyptians through to Greece and Rome. In the German town of Idar-Oberstein, agate cutting became a major craft from the Middle Ages onwards. Black agate in particular has long been seen as a strong, grounding stone, traditionally chosen as a protective charm.
